Jeb Card, Ph.D. 7/12/24
Anthropologist, author and researcher guests on Expanding Frontiers
Dr. Jeb Card is an Associate Teaching Professor in Anthropology at Miami University. He earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Tulane University.
Dr. Card's research, scholarship, and professional activities are split into three parts: the archaeology of eastern Mesoamerica; three-dimensional documentation and analysis of museum and collection artifacts; and the relationship of archaeology to concepts of time including the role of antiquity in modern esoteric, paranormal, and conspiracy belief communities.
At Miami University, Dr. Card has been managing a large legacy former museum collection with artifacts from around the globe but focused on the Americas. A significant part of this work has included the evolving technology of three-dimensional documentation and analysis of artifacts, which he incorporates into anthropology courses he teaches at the university.
In addition to field and lab work, Dr. Card examines the nature and development of archaeology in regards to other popular and influential conceptions of antiquity. This includes archival research, media analysis, and the examination of how antiquity is the foundational factor of paranormal and belief systems. Previous work on this topic includes his book Spooky Archaeology: Myth and the Science of the Past, and he is more recently working on a follow-up project on the cultural and historical emergence of a “paranormal unified field theory” strongly tied to considerations of antiquity.
