Susan Gerbic

Award-winning skeptic and driving force behind Guerrilla Skepticism of Wikipedia

Susan Gerbic

Susan Gerbic is an award-winning scientific skepticism activist, widely known for exposing people claiming to be mediums. She organized a group of volunteers, the “Guerrilla Skeptics,” who investigated self-described mediums. The group would set up fake Facebook profiles, then schedule and record sessions with purported mediums who claimed to receive messages from the subjects of the profiles. The Guerrilla Skeptics would post the resulting evidence online.

In 2010, Gerbic founded “Guerrilla Skepticism of Wikipedia,” a group of editors who create and edit Wikipedia articles to reflect scientific skepticism. The GSoW, as it is known, came to include 144 editors who worked on some 900 Wikipedia pages, as reported by The New York Times in 2019.

Susan Gerbic earned AAs in general studies in 1993 and history in 1998 while working and raising two sons. In 2002, she was awarded a BA in Social and Behavioral Studies by California State University, Monterey Bay. She is a columnist for Skeptical Inquirer, the co-founder of Monterey County Skeptics, and a fellow for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.
